Communities, and DAOs in particular, can be confusing and overwhelming, so we aim for this handbook to make it easy to understand and find your way in the DAO.

### First Steps...

Now you know a little bit about us, you're ready to take your [First Steps](/getting-started-in-the-dao/first-steps)...

# First Steps

A brief overview of how to get started in the DAO for Members and non-members alike.

We're delighted that you made it here.

Much of what we do is free and open to everyone as a public good. The first step to tap into the value the DAO can provide you is connecting with us on essential channels. We update and announce everything.

* Follow us on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/developer_dao)
* Subscribe to our [Newsletter](https://developerdao.substack.com/)
* Sign-up for [Events (Workshops, Hackathons, Community events)](https://lu.ma/developer-dao-events)

Once you're connected with us, it's time to get involved.

### Join one of our events

Events are core to the value the DAO provides for Members and non-members via social meetups, workshops, hackathons, IRL Parties and more.

Check out our guide on events below.

{% content-ref url="/pages/7BnkRgDK20S8tE76kcKp" %}
[Attend our Events](/getting-started-in-the-dao/attend-our-events)
{% endcontent-ref %}

### Join our Discord

Our discord is where the rest of the Alpha is at 🤫.

Joining our Discord required holding our D4R OG NFT or at least 400 CODE tokens. If you already hold either of these, head to [https://guild.xyz/dd ](https://guild.xyz/dd)to get access or check out the guide below.

If you don't, check the guide on joining our discord below.

# Attend our Events

Events are core to the value the DAO provides for Members and non-members via social meetups, workshops, hackathons, IRL Parties and more.

{% hint style="info" %}
Most of our events are open to everyone. However, some are held in discord and only available to members. This is made clear below, and also using tags on luma using `Members only` or `Open to all` tags.
{% endhint %}

## Where to find our events?

Our event calendar is hosted on Luma.

When you RSVP an event to an event on Luma, you'll get an event added to your diary. Remember to subscribe to our event notifications by clicking the "Subscribe" button on that page.

{% embed url="<https://lu.ma/developer-dao-events>" %}

### Adding events to your calendar

You can access the calendar for our events using the link below. &#x20;

You can also add a feed of our events to your Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar by clicking the 📶 icon on the link above.

# Join our Discord

Whilst the Discord !== the DAO, accessing our Discord community benefits your learning and career in Web3 (alpha).

### Requirements

To access the Developer DAO Discord, you need to hold one of the following:

1. Our original Devs for Revolution (D4R) NFT
2. At least 400 CODE tokens

### Purchasing the D4R NFT

{% hint style="info" %}
When trading NFTs, please confirm you're purchasing the official version. The Developer DAO NFT is verified on Etherscan [here](https://etherscan.io/address/0x25ed58c027921e14d86380ea2646e3a1b5c55a8b).
{% endhint %}

The easiest way to join our Discord community is to purchase the D4R NFT via one of the many available NFT marketplaces where the NFT is traded.

We recommend using either Opensean or Looksrare. You can find direct links to the page that lists our NFT on each platform below.

1. Opensea - <https://devdao.to/opensea-dd-nft>
2. Looksrare - <https://devdao.to/looks-rare-dd-nft>

Purchasing the NFT does not give you voting rights in the DAO. Voting requires holding the CODE token. You can acquire that by buying the token on the open market following the guide below or earning CODE by participating in the DAO.

### Purchasing CODE tokens

{% hint style="info" %}
When trading tokens, please confirm you're interactive with the official contract. You can verify the CODE tokens contract address by checking [token.developerdao.eth](https://app.ens.domains/token.developerdao.eth).&#x20;
{% endhint %}

### Joining Discord

We use a service called [Guild](https://guild.xyz/explorer) to manage the access to our community.

If you hold the D4R NFT or at least 400 CODE tokens, or any other tokens that give access (i.e. Hackathon participant NFTs), joining the server is a heading to the DAO's guild profile and connecting your wallet.

{% embed url="<https://guild.xyz/dd>" fullWidth="false" %}

# Show love with Praise

We've implemented Praise system in Discord that allows you to recognise other members in a peer-to-peer, decentralised way for any contributions to the community and be rewarded in CODE.

## What is Praise?

Praise is an open-source tool we use in Discord to empower Members to recognise each other contributors to the DAO in a peer-to-peer fashion. Per the latest [Labs budget](https://snapshot.org/#/devdao.eth/proposal/0xa4e9c1cf86839fb6682ceed5e2b33d95ba4182aa4bb6072840fcddd5e66370e7), 5,000 CODE is allocated to Members each month based on the Praise they receive.

You can read more about it on the Praise docs below or check out the introduction video from our Community Manager, [BillyJitsu](https://twitter.com/wc49358).

{% embed url="<https://docs.givepraise.xyz/>" %}

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/25ZFI98tqVE>" %}

## How to get started with Praise ?

Praise works via a Bot in Discord to issue and receive Praise and a dashboard where Members connect their wallet to complete their profile and set their receiver address to receive rewards.

### Activate your Praise account.

Head to any channel in Discord and type `/activate`. You will receive a message from the Praise bot to activate your account by going to our [dashboard](https://developerdao.givepraise.xyz/) and connecting your Ethereum wallet.

### Dishing out Praise

Dishing Praise is the act of acknowledging the contributions of other community members.

To begin dishing, type `/praise`. The bot will then give you two fields to fill out

1. `recievers` - who you're issuing Praise to (can be multiple people)
2. `reason` - why you're dishing out Praise to them

For a more detailed guide head to the Using Praise section of their docs below

{% embed url="<https://docs.givepraise.xyz/using-praise>" %}

### Writing excellent Praise

There are no rules for what you can or cannot Praise other members for. This intentionally allows a bottom-up, natural mechanism for rewards with limited bias.&#x20;

There are two main guidelines for writing excellent Praise.

1. **Be specific!** Name the exact contribution you want to praise.
2. **Express personal** or community impact! Say how the action or contribution has an impact on you or the community.

The Praise docs have a great guide on "Writing Excellent Praise", please check that out. We've included some important snippets it below as well.

{% embed url="<https://docs.givepraise.xyz/writing-excellent-praise>" %}

## Quantifying Praise

For each "period", we will assign "Quantifiers" who are randomly assigned an even number of "Praises" to rank each Praise from 0 to 100. Right now, this role is played by our CM [BillyJitsu](https://twitter.com/wc49358), and our Growth Ops Lead, [Kempsterrrr](https://twitter.com/kempsterrrr). We plan to expand this pool in the future.

Each Period's rewards will be issued based on the Praise points each receiver has after the process above has been completed.

## When will I get my Praise reward?

Each month the Praise reward will be issued alongside the monthly payroll. This typically is queued for signing on the last day of the month and signed within 24 hours.

# Publish on our blog \[WIP]

The DAO's loves publishing high-quality writing from our members. This page explains why it's great to do it, how you can get published and the guidelines you need to follow.

## Why write in the first place? 🤔

Writing is a superpower.

It helps consolidate your thoughts and understanding of topics, spreads knowledge and can have a compounding positive impact on your career, as once it's out there, it's there forever.

Check out the success stories below from members who've published on the blog.

Also, check out this 🔥 workshop from DAO technical writing legend [DappaDan](https://twitter.com/DAppaDanDev).

## What does the DAO publish?

Our blog aims to educate developers, give educated opinions on popular development topics, and share the experiences of the D\_D members.

There are currently three types of blog submissions we're accepting that have associated rewards:

<table data-full-width="false"><thead><tr><th width="197">Theme</th><th width="325.3333333333333">Description</th><th>Reward</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Technical Tutorials</td><td>Intermediate and expert article content that educates developers about specific topics, concepts, protocols or tools.</td><td>XXX USD</td></tr><tr><td>WAGMI</td><td>A place for a community member to share their personal stories on the DAO blog to inspire others.</td><td>XXX CODE</td></tr><tr><td>Open Submission</td><td>Open submission for opinion pieces or any other ideas you think would be valuable for our members and audience to read</td><td>XXX CODE</td></tr></tbody></table>

We especially aim to cover topics that can't be found elsewhere or cover commonly discussed topics in greater depth so readers come away with a deeper understanding of essential topics rather than just a simple introduction.

You can read some of our most viewed articles below:

## Publication Process

1. Any member can submit an article idea via [this form](https://app.deform.cc/form/24c47ba2-7bb1-4ffb-95c4-b0084a870136) (please see the "What does the DAO publish" section below first)
2. If accepted, our editors will get in touch and help you refine your title and outline. We will also decide on the mechanisms of the payout at this stage.
3. Writing: using our [content guidelines](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fBQil8YI1tDRFMLzr_if3CiuJfZPS7JEGRXQcaE56xk/edit#heading=h.hthkxwlbvt1q) you author the article, and our editor will be available along the way if you need support.
4. Once your draft is finalised, we will publish the article on the [blog](https://blog.developerdao.com/).
5. Your reward will be issued in line with the DAO's monthly payroll on or around the last day of the month.

## How do I get my employer's content published on the blog?

Thanks for your interest.

Publishing to our blog is reserved for Members to give them a platform to share their knowledge, be rewarded, and increase their profile in the industry. If you are a Member and you work for a protocol, the blog is not a platform for you to promote your employer.

We deal with such requests on a case-by-case basis. If your content is mostly agnostic of your employer's product or protocol (i.e. the content has value beyond just using their product), we may consider publishing it. However, it will likely be rejected if it is highly focused on the product or protocol and has no real value outside of using it.

You can reach out to <partnerships@developerdao.com> if you're interested in a partnership.

# Mission, Values & Goals

Developer DAO was started as an experiment by Nader Dabit on a [YouTube livestream in September 2021](https://www.youtube.com/live/NcOQG4Cpbdk?feature=share). The DAO's mission, values and goals were established by the community \~ a month later, on October 22nd 2021, via this [Snapshot vote](https://snapshot.org/#/devdao.eth/proposal/QmdZQD8h28PiWwwsdJo5mD2DBdC7BvYzrktmbsMoP4AcP6).

### Mission

> Our mission is to accelerate the education and value of a new wave of web3 builders.

### Values

1. **Transparency**: open source everything, conversations in public, document and share journey
2. **Diversity and Inclusion:** seek to foster as diverse a membership as possible and support everyone to contribute)
3. **Responsibility:** As a self-governed community, we rely on members to be personally responsible for their actions and commitments to the community.
4. **Kindness and empathy:** we know that we are living in a complex, stressful, and diverse world and go out of our way to make people’s lives and days better through our interactions.

### Goals

1. Onboard, Educate, and support Web3 Developers
2. Foster & Build Web3 Tools & Public Goods

Now you know what we're about, it's time to connect with us so you can stay up to speed with what is happening in the DAO and the opportunities to learn about and increase your impact in Web3.

# DAO Structure

This pages aims to explain the DAO in simple terms.

### Governance Roles

The DAO has three types distinct types of governance roles.

#### Members

Anyone and everyone is welcome to be a Member of the DAO.

As per the foundation's [bylaws](https://github.com/Developer-DAO/the-developer-dao-foundation/blob/main/foundation-docs/Bylaws%20-%20The%20Developer%20DAO%20Foundation.pdf), a Member is anyone who holds any number of CODE tokens. Members can participate in Governance by submitting proposals to the forum and voting on Snapshot.

Members are typically rewarded in CODE tokens for their participation in the DAO and other ways when taking advantage of the opportunities provided by the DAO. For example:

1. Bounties in hackathons run by the DAO.
2. Sponsored travel to participate in IRL Hackathons (i.e. ETH Global).
3. Access to unique offers, benefits and discounts with our partners.

#### Contributors

Contributors are people who work for the DAO.

Like Members, Contributors are rewarded in CODE for participating in the DAO; however, they're also paid in stablecoins for performing a specific role.&#x20;

Opportunities to become a Contributor are typically made available to the most active Members of the DAO who have shown an interest in contributing.

#### Stewards

Stewards are Members who are trusted with an elevated role in governance.

They are elected every quarter and rewarded in CODE for their contributions.&#x20;

### Sub-DAOs

In Developer DAO, the term Sub-DAO is synonymous with a workstream or team.

A Sub-DAO is an entity or group of Contributors delegated responsibility for a Domain of Operations by Members via Developer DAO Improvement Proposals (DDIP).

Sub-DAOs are the atomic units of how Developer DAO advances its mission. As such, ratifying Sub-DAOs sets boundaries on what is and isn’t in the scope of DAO governance.

# The CODE Token

An overview of the CODE token and its role in DAO Governance.

## What is the CODE token?

The CODE token is an ERC-20 token issued on Ethereum with a total supply of 10,000,000 tokens. The token's address can be validated by going to token.developerdao.eth.

## CODE Token Distribution

{% hint style="info" %}
The CODE Token distribution was originally established in [P-5: Governance Token Proposal](https://snapshot.org/#/devdao.eth/proposal/0x6c141b9efbfad6b370581eebf505408ba7f8619264b7e8ca03118fdf89975c97) and then amended in [P-10: Governance Token Allocation Amendment for Founding Team & Advisors](https://snapshot.org/#/devdao.eth/proposal/0x43ed479f57b22aa11499b3e1f5e9504723b1c5d4404dbd105869a37a00909113).
{% endhint %}

Initial allocations of the CODE token were calculated as follows:

| Percentage | Total Amount | Pool                            |
| ---------- | ------------ | ------------------------------- |
| 50%        | 5,000,000    | DAO Treasury                    |
| 25%        | 2,500,000    | NFT Holders at time of snapshot |
| 10%        | 1,000,000    | Early Contributors              |
| 6%         | 600,000      | Founding Team                   |
| 2%         | 200,000      | Unallocated Advisor Pool        |
| 1.55%      | 155,000      | Scholarships                    |
| 0.45%      | 45,000       | Advisors                        |

The claim period for the CODE token airdrop was set at six months. After that period, 1,370,243.86 CODE Tokens were left unclaimed and returned to the DAO Treasury in [this transaction](https://etherscan.io/tx/0xa13381557788cbb8b4fa9d719b5b7dccd7fc85172984db53fad40be462199d38).

## CODE Token utility

The CODE token is a Governance token. Its primary purpose is to empower Members to Govern the DAO via voting on [Snapshot](https://snapshot.org/#/devdao.eth)

It does, however, have some utility for Members beyond Governance:

1. Access to our Discord community
2. Certain Member-only opportunities (i.e. writing for the blog)

We hope to increase the utility of the CODE token over time and welcome all ideas and proposals to add utility. Please share them on our [governance forum](https://forum.developerdao.com/).

## How is the CODE token allocated?

CODE token allocations are agreed via our Governance process.

Any Member has the right to submit a Governance proposal that includes allocating CODE or other treasury assets to be considered by and voted on by the DAO if requirements are met.

If you're a Member hoping to earn CODE rewards, check out [How to earn CODE](/getting-started-in-the-dao/how-to-earn-code).

# Governance Process

An overview of Developer DAO's Governance processes, and how you can get involved.

## Scope of Developer DAO Governance

The following areas are currently under the Governance of Developer DAO Members:

* Any decision that impacts the Treasury balance or allocation that is not already accounted for in a previous proposal.
* Anything that impacts the Governance of the DAO
* Anything that impacts the “The Developer DAO Foundation" including its Articles and ByLaws.

Anything outside of this can be performed freely within pre-determined structures and mechanisms in the DAO.

## Governance Process

### Phase 0: Discussions

This phase is optional. However, it is recommended to have discussions in an open forum before submitting a proposal since a successful proposal will need to gather momentum among members.

| **Duration** | There is no specified time on how long a proposal remains in this phase |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Who**      | Anyone can post                                                         |
| **Where** | General Category on the forum |

### Phase 2: Developer DAO Improvement Proposal (DDIP)

A DDIP provides a structured overview of the proposal that acts as the basis for further discussions and also as a foundation for decision-making during the next phase.

|                  |                                                                                                                                                                                                        |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Duration**     | Minum 5 days (120 hours)                                                                                                                                                                               |
| **Who**          | Anyone can create a DDIP                                                                                                                                                                               |
| **Where**        | [Proposal category on the forum](https://forum.developerdao.com/c/proposals/5)                                                                                                                         |
| **Requirements** | Must use [this template](https://forum.developerdao.com/t/updated-proposal-template-for-ddip/1893/1) and can be elevated to Snapshot by an Stewards that supports the Proposal after required Duration |

# The Developer DAO Foundation

The Developer DAO is represented in the real-world by a Cayman Islands Foundation. This pages is an overview of how this relationship between the DAO and the Foundation works.

## Why have a legal entity?

Borrowing from our friends at ENS DAO, having a legal entity representing the DAO in the “real world” is valuable for several reasons:

* It provides limited liability to DAO participants for the actions of the DAO. Without a legal entity, participants may be individually held liable for anything the DAO as a whole does.
* It is capable of complying with taxation requirements. Without a legal entity, DAO participants may be held liable for a proportion of the DAO’s income, even if they cannot access these funds.
* It can enter into contracts with other “real world” entities, holding assets, etc.

### Mission, values & goals alignment

Successfully delivering on our mission to “accelerate the education and impact of a new wave of web3 builders” requires interfacing with the real world. A Cayman Foundation not only provides us with an entity, but its structure supports our membership's diverse and global nature, the philanthropic spirit of our mission via tax neutrality and the added peace of mind of defined regulation related to crypto tokens within which we can operate.
